Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the ability to search the text of a scanned document. Software has been developed that will analyze each line and letter in a scanned document to determine the text that was originally intended. In a typed document with high clarity, an OCR engine can correctly identify 98-99% of the text on a page. This allows for full-text search capability of records. Imagine a court case requiring the analysis of thousands of pages of documents. Rather than spending hours upon hours searching for all instances of a person’s name, you simply search electronically and all results are available in a matter of seconds.
